Description

Inspired by Michaelangelo’s The Creation of Adam, The Hand of Mission Control acknowledges the vital role played by NASA employees and contractors during the Apollo program.

Just 20 days after NASA completed their first sub-orbital flight, President John F. Kennedy made his iconic speech about putting a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth. This was a hugely ambitious goal; one that would require huge advancements in technology and a sizeable budget. It has been estimated that the Apollo program employed 400,000 people at its peak, and required the support of more than 20,000 industrial firms and universities.

When we think about the achievements of Apollo we often think about the astronauts who flew the missions. A total of 32 men were assigned to Apollo missions, 24 of those left Earth orbit, and just 12 men walked on the moon. Whilst their accomplishments are indeed vast, it’s easy to overlook the enormous team of men and women behind them whose work enabled mankind to take that one giant leap.

Michaelangelo’s work shows God giving life to Adam; this work symbolises all the men and women behind the scenes giving life to the Apollo program.
